About the museum
The Museo del Figurino Storico in Calenzano was founded in 1981, after an exhibition devoted to historical toy soldiers and figurines, thanks to the passion of model makers and collectors. Since 2004 it has been housed in the heart of Calenzano Alto, in the rooms of the medieval castle.
The collection, built up over the years through donations and loans from collectors and modellers, is rare in Italy: it displays detailed models ranging from the Assyrians to the Second World War. The route covers the ancient world, the Middle Ages, the early modern period, the Enlightenment, the Napoleonic era, the Risorgimento and colonialism, the Great War, the Second World War, the Gothic Line and the Resistance.
Over time the museum, originally conceived for specialists, has become a place for young people and model enthusiasts: it explains history in an enjoyable way through miniatures, offering adults a return to childhood games and children history in miniature. The museum offers educational activities and workshops for schools, families and groups.
