About the museum
The museum is housed in the Cassero di Porta Lame, a Baroque city gate in the walls of Bologna built in the mid-17th century. Named after Luigi Fantini, a pioneer of research into Bolognese prehistory who founded the Gruppo Speleologico Bolognese in 1932, it was officially established in 1995 and renovated in 2018, when part of the collections was moved to the ground floor.
The collections include minerals and fossils, largely from the Bolognese gypsum formations, photographic and surveying equipment, helmets and acetylene lamps, old tools for moving through caves, a section on the Roman aqueduct of Bologna and an area dedicated to Fantini, with his photographic plates. The museum is completed by a speleological library of over 8,000 volumes and a historical archive of images of caves and karst landscapes.
