About the museum
The museum, opened in 1959, is dedicated to the history of the Italian infantry. It is housed in a three-storey Liberty-style building in the Santa Croce in Gerusalemme military complex, in the Esquilino district.
The material is arranged chronologically across 35 rooms and 5 galleries, and includes weapons, uniforms, flags, memorabilia, documents, models, sculptures and paintings. The route runs from antiquity to the Risorgimento, through the two world wars and up to the War of Liberation. There is also a library, a historical archive and, on the first floor, a memorial shrine to the fallen.
Among the best-known displays are the model of the Battle of Zama of 202 BC and a full-scale reproduction of a First World War trench.
