About the museum
The Historic Museum of the Lungro Rock-Salt Mine tells the long story of rock-salt extraction in the village’s territory, one of the oldest and most important mines in Europe. According to the tourist presentation, salt was extracted by the Greek colonists of Sibari and Thurii, then by the Romans and the Normans, and its trade, carried on mule back, long sustained the local economy.
The museum was opened in 2010 on the initiative of Giovan Battista Rennis, then councillor for culture of the municipality. It is one of the cultural sites of the Ministry of Culture and, together with the mine, is included in the national circuit of disused mines and in the ReMi project of ISPRA.
