About the museum
The Museo WinterLine is housed in the 15th-century Palazzo De Utris, in the historic centre of Venafro, near the town hall. It is run by the WinterLine Venafro association and tells the story of the Winter Line, the German defensive system set up in the winter of 1943, also known as the Gustav Line, and of Venafro and its surroundings during the war.
The permanent exhibition opened on 15 March 2008, during the commemoration of the victims of 15 March 1944. It is based on a private collection of Second World War finds, donated to the public and enriched by discoveries made in the area.
Among the exhibits are a rare magazine for a Johnson LMG41 machine gun, a letter from Colonel Robert Frederick to a sergeant's family, identity tags found on Monte Sammucro, a silver ring that belonged to Moroccan soldiers, and letters from mothers to their sons at the front. The association also offers guided walks to the battle sites.
