About the museum
The Valle Lagorara site, in the municipality of Maissana, is an open-air jasper quarry exploited in prehistoric times, roughly between 3500 and 2000 BC. Experts consider it of great historical and scientific importance, both nationally and internationally, as a rare example of a large open-air quarry.
Research was carried out through excavation campaigns between 1988 and 1995, conducted by the Soprintendenza Archeologica della Liguria (the heritage authority), and continued with the staff of the Museo Archeologico di Chiavari led by Roberto Maggi. The excavations identified two main extraction areas and two rock shelters on the opposite slope, yielding waste flakes, fragments of hammerstones and remains of ceramic or steatite objects used by the ancient miners.
Quarrying generally produced semi-finished pieces, which were finished elsewhere.
