About the museum

The MuSel is the civic museum of Sestri Levante and is one of the hubs of the Sistema museale integrato of Sestri Levante and Castiglione Chiavarese. It was established as a permanent cultural service of the Comune by a resolution of the town council of 26 March 2013, which approved its founding project and regulations. Management is entrusted to the company Mediaterraneo Servizi.

The museum occupies the third and fourth floors of Palazzo Fascie, in Corso Colombo, and is divided into two sections. On the fourth floor, the archaeology section traces the history of the Tigullio and its hinterland from the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic through the Metal Ages, the Roman period and the Middle Ages, with finds from surveys and excavations, the ancient copper mines, the jasper quarries and two Roman boundary markers from Monte Ramaceto. A reconstruction also illustrates an underwater find at San Michele di Pagana, in the municipality of Rapallo.

On the third floor, the Museo della Città (Museum of the City) tells, through photographs and documents, the story of the harbour's birth, its medieval development, maritime trade, shipbuilding, 20th-century industry, emigration and everyday life. Guided visits, workshops for children and excursions in the area complete the offer.
