Civic museum of Sondrio in Palazzo Sassi de' Lavizzari: archaeology, sacred art, the Ligari family, collections, the 20th century and the history of the town.
The first exhibition entirely devoted to the Valtellina painter Luigi Bracchi: 52 works, including landscapes, views, still lifes and portraits, that trace his artistic development and his bond with his wife Regina Cassolo Bracchi.
About the museum
The museum, established in 1947, has its roots in the Comitato Archeologico Provinciale, founded in 1874 by a group of scholars with the aim of studying and preserving whatever in the province belongs to antiquarian, artistic and local history. It is housed in Palazzo Sassi de' Lavizzari, a 16th-century building in Sondrio's historic centre, whose current entrance opens onto the Giardini Sassi.
The route is organised into six sections: Archaeology, from prehistory to the Middle Ages, in a large basement room; Sacred Art, which began in 1961 as a detached section of the Museo diocesano di Como and is spread over eight rooms; Collections, which tells how the objects entered the municipal heritage; the Fondo Ligari, with over a thousand paintings, drawings, prints and documents from the family of Valtellina painters, donated in 1935; the 20th-century collection, begun in the 1950s with a section dedicated to the Valtellina landscape; and History, on the people and events of Sondrio.
The museum also houses a specialist library, a photographic archive and a historical archive, a lecture hall and rooms for temporary exhibitions, and offers workshops for children and routes for people with disabilities.
