About the museum

The museum opened in May 2003 in Nicolosi, on the southern slope of Etna, in the historic home of Mario Gemmellaro, a Sicilian volcanologist of the 19th century. It was created by the Provincia regionale di Catania with the aim of making visitors better acquainted with the highest and most active volcano in Europe.

The route is divided into two parts. The documentation centre holds photographs and large prints of the most important eruptions of recent decades, and a scale model of the Etna area. The educational section displays samples of rocks and products of volcanic activity, such as slag, volcanic bombs, hematite and sulphur crystals, and silicates.
