About the museum
MUSEUM, Osservatorio dell’arte contemporanea in Sicilia, is a private museum in Bagheria founded to protect and promote contemporary art by Sicilian artists. The idea dates back to 1994, and the institution was officially inaugurated in 1997; its founder and director is Ezio Pagano, who had long experience running an art gallery. It is the first example of a private museum in Sicily.
The collection documents Sicilian art of the 20th century, with particular attention to the second half of the century. It includes paintings and sculptures by artists such as Carla Accardi, Pietro Consagra, Piero Guccione, Renato Guttuso, Emilio Isgrò, Augusto Perez, Antonio Sanfilippo and Salvatore Scarpitta, and is also expanding into video art. It now numbers over 500 works by almost 300 artists.
Alongside the exhibition rooms, the museum holds a historical archive on Sicilian artists of the 20th century, as well as a specialised library and video library. It runs educational and outreach activities, with long-standing partnerships with the University of Siena (Specialization School in Contemporary Art) and the University of Palermo, and organises lectures with critics and artists.
