About the museum
The Porto necropolis developed on the island between the Tiber and the Fossa Traiana, today's Fiumicino canal, along the line of the Via Flavia. It was used from the late 1st century AD to the 4th century AD and comprises over two hundred funerary buildings.
Most of the tombs are square, with one or two storeys, brick façades, sometimes with triangular pediments and travertine elements. In the open spaces between the large tombs the poorer burials were placed, in simple forms: box tombs covered with tiles, wooden chests, amphorae or simply earth. Excavations were carried out in the 1920s and 1930s.
The inscriptions and brick reliefs next to them show everyday trades, such as the midwife, the surgeon, the blacksmith and the grain merchant, and tell the story of a community of traders, freedmen and small entrepreneurs. The necropolis is part of the Parco archeologico di Ostia antica.
