About the museum
The Museo Agostinelli was founded in the 1960s at Dragona, a few kilometres from the sea at Ostia, on the initiative of Domenico Agostinelli, a collector from Abruzzo who began with a collection of holy images and then broadened his interest to testimonies, traditions and trades of the past. At the beginning of the 1990s the museum was recognised by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities.
The display is deliberately not organised around specific themes: among thousands of objects of every kind, visitors find their own route by instinct, among everyday tools, memorabilia, rarities, dinosaur eggs, fragments of meteorites and letters of historical figures of the 20th century. The museum brings together more than four hundred collections, from cameras to umbrellas and stamps.
Outside there is a large open-air area, called “la grande arena del tempo” (“the great arena of time”), a memory park in which materials of every kind are gathered. The collection is also used to hire stage furnishings and period objects to film and television productions. A virtual tour is available on the museum's website.
