About the museum
The museum stands on the site where, during works for Leonardo da Vinci airport, five Roman ship wrecks were discovered between 1958 and 1965 inside the ancient harbour basin of Claudius and Trajan. Opened in 1979, it was closed in 2002 and reopened in October 2021 with a new display funded by a programme of the Ministry of Culture.
The collection is one of the most important in the Mediterranean for ancient vessels: it includes three river cargo boats that linked Portus with Rome along the Tiber, a seagoing merchant ship and a small fishing boat with a central tank to keep the catch alive.
The route extends over two levels, with walkways from which the hulls can be observed, and includes a multimedia room dedicated to ancient navigation and the port. The museum is part of the Parco archeologico di Ostia antica (Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica).
