About the museum
The Punic necropolis of Palermo extends across the western part of the city. In antiquity it lay outside the walls, on a raised area that continued the strip of land between the rivers Kemonia and Papireto. Since 1746, when the first discoveries were made during the construction of the Albergo dei Poveri, more than seven hundred tombs have been found, dating from the 7th to the 3rd century BC.
The part that can be visited today lies beneath the Tukory barracks, between Piazza Indipendenza, Corso Pisani, Via Cuba, Via Pindemonte and Via Danisinni. Between February and June 2004, a section of the necropolis with about 150 burials was excavated here. To this investigation were added chance discoveries: a rock-cut chamber tomb with one of the oldest grave goods, of Phoenician type, came to light during water-main works at the corner of Via Maggiore Amari and Corso Calatafimi, and two others during the restoration of the Albergo dei Poveri.
The site is managed by the Regione Siciliana and can only be visited on set days and on request.
