About the museum

The oratory stands at Morra, a few kilometres from Città di Castello, and is dedicated to Crescentino, a Roman soldier martyred in 303 under Diocletian and venerated in the Upper Tiber valley. The building dates from 1420 and was enlarged in 1507. In 1264 a confraternity of San Crescentino was founded, which used the original small oratory, today the sacristy of the church.

In the sacristy are preserved late Gothic frescoes, among them the Roman soldier, an Annunciation, a fragmentary Crucifixion and a Madonna of Mercy. The hall, simple and rectangular, with a truss roof, is decorated with frescoes dated between 1507 and 1517 and attributed to Luca Signorelli and his collaborators. On the left wall appear the Entry into Jerusalem, the Incredulity of St Thomas, the Prayer in the Garden and the Last Supper, mostly executed by the workshop; the Flagellation and the Crucifixion are by the master's own hand.

On the high altar is an aedicule in the form of a shell, frescoed with the Redeemer between two angels and saints. In 1973 the restoration of the frescoes was made possible by a contribution from the painter Alberto Burri. The oratory is part of the network of the Museo diocesano di Città di Castello.
