About the museum

The museum occupies the farmhouse next to the villa of the marquises Capelletti, at Garavelle, on the southern edge of Città di Castello. It was created in 1974 by the Umbria Region, the Cassa di Risparmio and the municipality as one of the projects to keep folk traditions alive. It recreates, in a typical farmhouse of the Valtiberina (Upper Tiber valley), the life of peasant families, who had to make do in every way.

On the ground floor are the blacksmith’s workshop, with a fine leather bellows, the forge and the tools of the trade, and the stables with yokes, baskets and harnesses for working with animals. There is also a cellar with a wooden press and an oil mill with press and millstone. On the first floor visitors see the large kitchen with its fireplace and fire utensils, and a bedroom with bedside tables and religious images.

In the large attic are the farming tools used for harvesting grain and some looms, essential for domestic life. The route, organised by rooms, shows the everyday objects of the peasant families of the upper Tiber valley.
