Pinacoteca comunale di Città di Castello

Civic picture gallery in the 16th-century Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera, the second art collection in Umbria, with works by Signorelli, Raphael and the Della Robbia.

Opening hoursAdmission €8

About the museum

The gallery found its permanent home in 1912, when Elia Volpi donated the Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera to the Municipality. The building was erected for the wedding of Alessandro Vitelli and Angela Paola dei Rossi di San Secondo, and took its present form in the first half of the 16th century; the name recalls a nearby cannon foundry. The garden façade has sgraffito decorations by Cristofano Gherardi, known as Il Doceno, after a design by Vasari, while the frescoes on the staircase are attributed to Cola dell’Amatrice and to Gherardi himself.

The collection is considered the second in Umbria after the Galleria nazionale di Perugia. The oldest work is the large altarpiece with the Madonna enthroned and six angels by the Master of Città di Castello; there are also works by Spinello Aretino, Neri di Bicci and Antonio Vivarini, and a reliquary of the arm of Saint Andrew of 1420 attributed to Lorenzo Ghiberti.

Luca Signorelli is represented by a fragment of fresco with Saint Paul and by the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian of 1498; a banner of the Holy Trinity by Raphael is preserved, an ex-voto painted during a plague. Numerous terracottas by Andrea and Giovanni Della Robbia are also present. On the ground floor the modern section includes the Gipsoteca Elmo Palazzi, the bronzes of Bruno Bartoccini, the Collezione Ruggieri and the Nuvolo donation.
