About the museum
The cultural association Antigone – Osservatorio sulla 'ndrangheta was founded in 2007 to carry out research, analysis and documentation on the 'ndrangheta in Calabria, Italy and abroad, and to develop cultural strategies as alternatives to the mafia mentality. It is based at Croce Valanidi, in Reggio Calabria, in a building confiscated from organised crime, which opened in December 2009 as the Museo della 'ndrangheta.
In the rooms of the Osservatorio, tablets, monitors and multimedia totems guide visitors through a route exploring the world of organised crime and the stories of its victims. The building also hosts thematic exhibitions on the mafias, produced in part in collaboration with the Accademia di Belle Arti of Reggio Calabria.
The association offers guided tours of the confiscated property, activities for schools and young people, and projects of diffuse memory, such as the stumbling stones (pietre d'inciampo) laid on the seafront of Reggio Calabria.
