About the museum
The museum grew out of the collection that the lawyer and dialect poet Nello Cassata began to assemble in the mid-twentieth century, helped by his son Franco, with farm tools, household utensils and everyday objects from peasant Sicily. To manage and promote the heritage, the Istituto Oikos, a non-profit association that now runs the museum, was founded in 1995.
The site occupies about 1,500 square metres in contrada Manno, along the state road 113, and comprises a two-storey manor house from the late nineteenth century with an ancient vaulted palmento (winepress) on the ground floor, a doorway decorated with reliefs depicting rural life, a stone atrium in local stone and a Sicilian garden.
About 20,000 finds are catalogued, of which about 3,000 are on display. The sections include agricultural tools and machinery, household utensils, industrial archaeology (with prototype typewriters), navigation instruments, military relics, musical instruments and music manuscripts. About 45 reconstructed craft workshops illustrate traditional production processes; a restoration laboratory also offers teaching courses.
