About the museum
The Circolo Artistico Politecnico was founded in 1888, and Palazzo Zapata housed the first seat of the Neapolitan artists. The museum holds the heritage of the Foundation, built up over about three centuries, from the 19th century to the present, largely thanks to donations from the artist members of the Circle.
The route is on the second floor of the palace, in Piazza Trieste e Trento, and recreates the atmosphere of a 19th-century cultural salon, where visitors are welcomed as guests. It spans from the Belle Époque to contemporary art, and the museum presents itself as a place different from a traditional museum.
The collections include some 520 paintings and 80 sculptures, around 5,500 photographs, some 4,700 volumes, documentary items, musical instruments and period furnishings, as well as a historic archive. The Foundation also promotes exhibitions, art competitions, lectures and concerts.
