About the museum

The PARC, Paleo Archeo Centro, is a newly conceived museum closely linked to the territory of Genoni and the Giara: a place to understand palaeontological and archaeological phenomena and their importance. The building, in the locality of Santu Antine, is owned by the Comune di Genoni, which runs the museum on a non-profit basis; educational activity, collaboration with schools and universities, and workshops are its central aims.

The museum is divided into three sections. The palaeontological section explains the principles of geology and fossilisation and presents the collection of fossils from the area, restored and classified by the Department of Earth Sciences in Cagliari and by the Soprintendenza. The route begins with two blocks of sandstone rich in sea urchins and includes a large image of the Duidduru geosite and a diorama of life among the organisms that are now fossils.

The archaeological section recounts the Nuragic, Punic and Roman discoveries of the area with a model of the Santu Antine hill, showing the Roman church, the Punic fortifications, the nuraghe and the deepest nuragic well in Sardinia, along with a 1:1 diorama of the bottom of the well and replicas of the finds. A video shows the inside of the well, and viewers let visitors simulate flying over the Giara. The third section is a large educational workshop for schools and families, with simulated palaeontological and archaeological digs, microscopes and tools for cleaning fossils.
