About the museum
The Museo Maratè is housed in the former convent of the Padri Scolopi (Piarist Fathers) in Isili, a 17th-century building in the centre of the town, and is the only copper museum in Sardinia. It tells the story of two craft traditions typical of the town: copper working and weaving.
The idea for the museum emerged in the early 1980s, in a climate of attention to popular culture, with the aim of documenting the world of coppersmiths and itinerant traders. The Comune, which promoted the initiative, appointed a scientific committee of university lecturers and local experts and entrusted the restoration of the premises to the architect Tatiana Kirova; in the 1990s the purchase and cataloguing of the first objects began.
The route is accompanied by music, voices and sound effects that evoke the workshops, including the coppersmiths’ secret jargon. The copper section shows tools, a reconstructed workshop and the typical cart of the itinerant trader, with objects presented in their domestic, agricultural and pastoral use. The textile section includes thirty tapestries woven on horizontal looms with wool, gold, silver and copper threads, raffia and linen, hand-dyed with herbs, and an ethnographic section on weaving.
