About the museum

The terramare were fortified Bronze Age villages which, around the middle of the 2nd millennium BC, stood in the central Po Valley. The one at Montale, inhabited in the Middle and Late Bronze Age, has been excavated and developed into an archaeological park and open-air museum, managed by the Museo civico di Modena in collaboration with the Comune di Castelnuovo Rangone.

The route combines the archaeological area, where the original stratigraphy and the fortifications of the ancient settlement are preserved, with an open-air museum showing a full-scale reconstruction of a village, with dwellings, defences and spaces of everyday life based on excavation data. The reconstructed houses are being restored and tested with natural building techniques.

In recent years the park has been extended with a new area devoted to the necropolis, which illustrates the funerary rites of the terramara communities, and with an immersive visit combining archaeology, digital reconstruction and storytelling. The park also offers demonstrations of traditional crafts, workshops for children and educational routes for schools.
