About the museum
For centuries the villa was the residence of the Visconti Venosta marquises, who lived there until 1982. It became the family’s home in the 17th century and was used mainly as a summer house. It took on its present form through the alterations commissioned by Marquis Emilio Visconti Venosta from 1886 onwards. It is one of the few noble residences in Valtellina that still retain their original furnishings.
The guided tour passes through salons, halls, the armoury, the library and service rooms over two floors. The museum holds furniture, artworks, books and objects collected by Emilio, a diplomat and art enthusiast in contact with the Accademia di Brera. In the salon are two painted wooden panels by Cipriano Valorsa, a 16th-century painter active in Valtellina, which come from the church of Sant’Abbondio in Semogo, and a painting by Giuseppe Bertini.
The villa stands in a park of about 17,000 square metres, which is open to the public. It is run within the Sistema Museale Valtellina.
