About the museum
The Rupe Magna was discovered in 1966 by Davide Pace, a local scholar. It is a rock 84 metres long and 35 metres wide bearing more than 5,000 carved figures. The images span a period from the end of the Neolithic, in the 4th millennium BC, to the Iron Age, and include human figures (orants, warriors, wrestlers), animals, geometric motifs, cup marks and everyday objects such as rakes. Some crosses show that the rock continued to be carved in historical times.
About 50 other carved rocks have been identified on the nearby Dosso Giroldo. Since 1991 archaeological excavations have been carried out on the Dosso dei Castelli and the Dosso Giroldo, promoted by the Consorzio per il Parco delle Incisioni Rupestri, which have documented Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements.
The results of the excavations are presented in the Antiquarium, opened in 2006 in the Ca’ del Cap building, which also houses the Centro Studi dedicated to Davide Pace. On the Dosso dei Castelli there are also two medieval fortifications, which complete the park’s route and can be visited freely.
