About the museum

The Parco letterario Salvatore Quasimodo (literary park) is in Roccalumera, the village from which the poet’s family came. Quasimodo was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1959. The park was founded by the brothers Carlo and Sergio Mastroeni, with the steady collaboration of Alessandro Quasimodo, an actor, director and son of the poet. Its seat is the former railway station, in memory of the profession of the poet’s father, Gaetano, and of his grandfather Vincenzo, deputy mayor of Roccalumera.

The museum, housed in the station premises, preserves documents, furniture and memorabilia that belonged to Quasimodo, including his honorary degree (laurea honoris causa) from the University of Messina and the study from his Milan home. In the former goods yard stands the museum train, made up of five period freight wagons, with a photographic exhibition on the life and works of the poet, created and donated by the critic Sergio Palumbo.

The visit continues in the Torre Saracena, mentioned in the poem dedicated to his dead brother, where an 18th-century print showing the tower’s original appearance and gouaches painted by Quasimodo himself are on display. The park is run by the Club Amici di Salvatore Quasimodo, which has its headquarters in the tower, and it is a place for meetings and events.
