About the museum
The museum was set up in 2005 inside the Rufo Ruffo castle, a fortress of medieval origin that played an important role in the defence of Messina in the 13th century, during the Swabian period. From the 17th century the castle belonged to the Ruffo family, who used it as a hunting lodge, until 1970, when Prince Sigerio Ruffo donated it to the Comune on condition that it be used as a multi-purpose cultural centre.
The museum displays a valuable collection of war weapons and armour, alongside medals, craft objects and iconographic and heraldic documents, some of which belonged to the Ruffo family.
