About the museum
The museum is in the historic centre of Rio Marina, in the former mining administration building known as the Palazzo del Burò, which now houses the Parco Minerario dell’Isola d’Elba (Elba Island Mining Park). The park was founded in 1991 to regenerate areas degraded by iron extraction and to support local economic and social development, enhancing a geological, mineralogical and historical heritage of great value.
The main hall displays the minerals of Elba. In the other rooms, mine settings have been reconstructed by industrial archaeology experts, using original material recovered from the old mines.
The museum is the gateway to the open-air museum of the mining sites of Rio Marina and Rio Albano. The park organises guided tours of the main sites, including Bacino, Valle Giove, Falcacci and delle Conche, which can be visited on foot, by bicycle, on a small train or in a military off-road vehicle along the old railway lines.
