About the museum

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is housed in Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, overlooking the Grand Canal, which was the private home of the collector Peggy Guggenheim. Until her death in 1979, the house was open to the public free of charge once a week.

The museum opened in 1980 and is part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The collection is based mainly on Peggy Guggenheim's personal collection and is smaller and more focused than those of the other Guggenheim museums.

In 2012 Hannelore and Rudolph Schulhof donated 83 works by major contemporary artists. In 2016 the museum acquired an additional building, which houses a café, an educational centre and storage. Among the best-known works are pieces by Picasso, Dalí, Magritte, Brâncuși, Pollock and Boccioni, as well as the sculpture “L’angelo della città” by Marino Marini in front of the Grand Canal.
