About the museum
The museum is in the historic centre of Assisi, at the start of Via Portica, and allows visitors to see the remains of the forum of ancient Asisium, which began as an Umbrian settlement, came under Roman control in the 3rd century BC and became a municipium in the 1st century BC. The area was discovered during excavations by a French architect in the first half of the 19th century.
The first Roman inscriptions were displayed in the colonnade of the Temple of Minerva as early as the late 18th century; the collections grew with contributions from the Accademia Properziana and in 1890 were moved to the Convent of Sant’Antonio da Padova. The museum was formally established in 1934, after the church of San Niccolò di Piazza, of which the crypt survives, was demolished in 1926. A restoration of the archaeological area was completed in 2008.
The route starts in the crypt, with urns, sarcophagi and stelae found in Assisi and the surrounding area, and continues on a glass walkway above the original paving: visitors can see the travertine retaining wall, the tribunal, a small temple dedicated to Castor and Pollux, a monumental cistern and the tabernae. An audiovisual presentation tells the story of the excavation, and the last room houses statues from the Roman period.
