Pinacoteca Giuseppe De Nittis

Picture gallery of Barletta in Palazzo della Marra with the donation of Léontine De Nittis: 139 paintings and works on paper by the painter Giuseppe De Nittis.

Opening hoursAdmission €6

About the museum

The Pinacoteca Giuseppe De Nittis holds the collection donated to the city of Barletta by the painter's widow, Léontine Gruvelle. Giuseppe De Nittis, born in Barletta in 1846, was one of the leading figures of nineteenth-century painting; in Paris he mixed with artists such as Manet, Degas, Caillebotte and Tissot.

The collection was first housed in the former Dominican convent in via Cavour and then in rooms on the first floor of the Fortezza federiciana (Frederick II's fortress), after the restoration of the Castello di Barletta. In 2007 the works were moved to Palazzo della Marra, in the historic centre, after a recent renovation of the building, partly because the castle's proximity to the sea was considered a possible risk to conservation.

The collection comprises 139 paintings, 54 graphic works and 154 books with dedications. The route is divided into sections, with rooms whose colours recall the painter's palette; in some sections De Nittis's works are compared with those of other artists of the period and with reproductions of paintings held in foreign museums.
