Opening hoursAdmission €6

About the museum

The Museo civico di Barletta was established in 1929. Originally it was housed in the former 16th-century Dominican convent; since 2003 it has been located within the Swabian Castle, the great fortress by the sea in the centre of the town.

The collections include archaeological finds, paintings by artists from Barletta and important donations, among them those of Giuseppe Gabbiani, Vincenzo De Stefano, Raffaele Girondi and Ferdinando Cafiero. The route displays paintings and sculptures of the Neapolitan school from the 17th to the 20th century, panels with sacred subjects from the 14th and 15th centuries, works by artists from central and northern Italy of the 19th and 20th centuries, objects from the Cafiero donation and Tuscan antique furniture.

The display is organised in three sections: the Galleria Antica, the Galleria dell'Ottocento and the Galleria di Ferdinando Cafiero. The museum also holds valuable sculptures and artefacts, such as a stone bust of Frederick II of Swabia, Risorgimento relics, a banner of the 9th Garibaldi Regiment and a coin cabinet.
