About the museum
The Museo Diocesano di Andria was established by episcopal decree of 20 May 1972. The first nucleus of the collections came from the initiative of Mons. Lanave, bishop from 1969 to 1988, who recovered paintings, chandeliers and marbles forgotten in the sacristies of churches. Bishop Raffaele Calabro (1989–2016) later organised the diocesan museum into three sections: Andria, Canosa di Puglia and Minervino.
The Andria section, dedicated to San Riccardo, is housed in Palazzo Margiotta, a 20th-century building in the historic centre, formerly the seat of the Comunità dei Garzoni, restored to host the museum.
The first floor traces the history of the diocese from its origins to the early 19th century through works of sacred art. The second floor is devoted to the spiritual and organisational renewal promoted by the bishops between the 19th and 20th centuries and to the cult of San Riccardo, patron saint of Andria, with relics kept in a gilded wooden urn, a silver cast of the saint's head, the mitre and the crozier. The museum's website also presents thematic routes: from the Middle Ages to the 15th century, with the figure of Duke Francesco II del Balzo; from the 16th century to the Baroque period; and the instruments of the liturgy.
