About the museum
The Pinacoteca di Bari was officially founded on 12 July 1928. The collection was formed by bringing together paintings from churches and convents suppressed at the end of the 19th century and kept in the picture gallery of the Museo Archeologico Provinciale, founded in 1875; deposits from Apulian churches and convents; loans from the national galleries of Naples and Rome; and works purchased by the Provincial Administration.
In 1957 the De Gemmis donation arrived, largely consisting of Apulian ceramics of the 17th and 18th centuries, and in the same year a plaster-cast gallery (gipsoteca) with casts of Apulian sculpture was set up in the Castello Svevo; in 1958 the large Caleno nativity scene with about five hundred figures was donated. In 1964 the exhibition “Mostra dell’arte in Puglia dal Tardoantico al Rococò”, curated by Michele D’Elia, opened the history of the museum’s temporary exhibitions. In the 1980s the photographic archive of Vincenzo Simone, with about 14,000 glass plates, was acquired; in 1987 the Collezione Grieco, of about fifty Italian paintings of the 19th and early 20th centuries, was shown. From 2003 the Banco di Napoli has granted long-term deposit of works, mainly from Naples, from the 16th to the 19th century.
The gallery, housed on the fourth floor of the Palazzo della Provincia on the Lungomare Nazario Sauro, documents art from and related to Apulia from the 11th to the 20th century: medieval sculpture and icons, Venetian paintings, Apulian and Neapolitan works, a nucleus of paintings by Corrado Giaquinto, 19th-century painting and the Collezione Grieco.
