About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Bari preserves the artistic heritage of the Archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto. It was founded by Archbishop Andrea Mariano Magrassi and inaugurated on 7 June 1981; the detached section in Bitonto opened in 1986.
The Bari site occupies the rooms on the first floor of the Episcopio, the archbishop’s palace next to the Cathedral, in the historic and religious heart of the city. The route is divided into five sections: the lapidarium, which tells the architectural history of the Duomo through works by masters such as Anseramo da Trani and Peregrino di Salerno; the picture gallery, with paintings from the 16th to the 18th century by artists including Tintoretto, Veronese, Corrado Giaquinto and Paris Bordon, and a section of Russian icons; the treasury, with precious liturgical objects, including reliquary busts; the room of sacred vestments from the 15th to the 20th century; and the rooms of the Exultet rolls and the Benedictional, liturgical texts from the Benevento area of the 11th century.
The museum also includes a documentation center with a library and archive.
