About the museum
The Palazzo dell'Acqua is the historic headquarters of the Acquedotto Pugliese in Bari and preserves the memory of the undertaking that brought water to a region traditionally short of it. In 1924 the Royal Commissioner of the autonomous Acquedotto Pugliese agency, the engineer Gaetano Postiglione, commissioned Cesare Vittorio Brunetti, then thirty-one years old, to design a building in the Murattian quarter. It was to stand as a lasting testimony to the conquest of water and also house the agency's technical and administrative offices.
Seven years passed before the city could admire the palace, which Brunetti himself described as an example of transitional Apulian Romanesque. The building is an architectural and artistic work which, in its details, tells the story of the Acquedotto's achievement, and it is included in the city's historic and artistic itinerary.
The visit reveals the story of the birth of the Acquedotto Pugliese and the meaning of the palace. On the first floor, a room is dedicated to the memory of Francesco Martino, a gymnast from Bari and employee of the Acquedotto who won two gold medals at the 1924 Olympics in Paris.
