About the museum
The gallery opened in 2006 to display the works of Teofilo Patini, a painter born in Castel di Sangro, and of his pupils. It is housed in the Renaissance palace of the De Petra family, also known as the Casa del Leone (House of the Lion) because of the sculpture above the entrance portal.
Many works are devoted to the pastoral and rural life of the area. Patini, who had socialist sympathies, wanted to portray in paint both the poverty and the vitality of the humblest classes. The most important section is the “Trilogia sociale”, made up of “Vanga e latte” (Spade and Milk), “Erede” (Heir) and “Bestie da soma” (Beasts of Burden), which expresses the theme of Abruzzese farming life at its fullest.
Some works show the historic centre of Castel di Sangro from the town’s rock, while another section displays 18th-century prints with figures from classical mythology shown in costumes of the Spanish period.
