About the museum

The museum is in the historic centre of San Pietro Avellana, in a building constructed with stones salvaged from the rubble of the 1943 bombings, which destroyed much of the village along the Gustav Line. It stands on the remains of a monastery dedicated to St Peter, founded, according to the records of Montecassino, in 1026 at the wish of the Borrello counts. Within the archaeological section, some stretches of stone wall and a fragment of floor of limestone slabs are visible.

The archaeological section holds burials from the Piana Fusaro necropolis, discovered in 2004 during works for a gas pipeline: 25 pit or tumulus tombs dating between the 8th and 6th centuries BC, with grave goods of iron weapons, bronze razors, pottery, fibulae and jewellery of glass paste and amber. The museum displays five furnished burials, three of them reconstructed in display cases, together with an inscribed cippus and an imperial-period funerary stele.

The Civiltà e Costume (Civilisation and Costume) section gathers thousands of objects donated by the community: period costumes up to the 17th century, tools of old trades, furnishings of noble, bourgeois and peasant families, and rebuilt rooms such as a kitchen, a bedroom and a school classroom. A multimedia section, “Autunno ’43”, tells the story of the liberation and the destruction and reconstruction of the village. The museum also holds a photographic and documentary archive.
