About the museum
The museum was founded in 1897 to house the finds from the excavations of the Samnite necropolis of Alfedena, at Campo Consolino. Late 19th-century research, first conducted by Antonio De Nino and then by Lucio Mariani, brought to light hundreds of tombs dating between the 6th and 4th centuries BC, belonging to the ancient Aufidena, centre of the Carecini Samnites, which came under Roman rule in 287 BC.
The display consists mainly of grave goods dating from the 7th to the 3rd century BC: ceramic vessels, amber necklaces, jewellery and bronze objects. Alfedena is regarded as one of the key sites for understanding the archaic cultures of Abruzzo, thanks to the vast necropolis in the valley below the settlement and the large acropolis about 500 metres away.
Among the most significant pieces are the cardiophylax, a bronze breastplate disc with a fantastic two-headed quadruped, a bronze sword with a scene of a fight between stags engraved on the hilt, a bronze belt and the jewellery from female tombs. The museum is named after Antonio De Nino, a scholar of the archaeology of Abruzzo.
