About the museum
The Museo Orientale “Umberto Scerrato” is an educational body of the Università di Napoli “L'Orientale”, consisting of the museum itself, a library and an archaeological laboratory. It is named after the scholar Umberto Scerrato, its main promoter, who collected some of the pieces from the Islamic world. Together with the Museo della Società africana d'Italia, it forms part of the university's museum system. It was inaugurated in November 2012 and holds materials acquired by the university since the 1960s.
The collections include seals from the ancient Near East, Egyptian funerary stelae, pottery excavated in Sudan, finds from Eritrea and Ethiopia, sculptures from north-western India, a rich Islamic section with stelae, ceramics and metalwork, and Chinese porcelain.
The educational purpose is emphasised by six models documenting the university's archaeological activities in Iran and Yemen. Catalogues and collection records are available on the website.
