About the museum
The Sant’Anastasia archaeological area lies in the upper part of Sardara, near the church of the same name, at the foot of the Pran’e Cuaddus rise in the central Campidano. The Nuragic sanctuary centres on a well temple, one of the most important in Nuragic Sardinia, set within a civic and religious settlement that is still being excavated.
The well, built with blocks of basalt and limestone, dates from the Late Bronze Age (13th–12th centuries BC): a hall with benches leads to a staircase of twelve steps that descends into a circular chamber with a tholos roof. About ten metres away stands a second sacred well, whose decorated blocks are partly incorporated into the façade of the church. Excavations have also brought to light a large curvilinear enclosure with the remains of huts, including the “capanna delle riunioni” (assembly hut) with an altar in the form of a Nuragic tower and a hoard of bronze objects.
The religious use of the site continued after the Nuragic period, as shown by Punic pottery and the remains of a Byzantine building beneath the church, which dates from the 15th century. Excavations began in 1913 with Antonio Taramelli, continued in the 1980s with Giovanni Ugas and Luisanna Usai, and in 2000–2001 with Roberto Sirigu. The finds are displayed in the Civico Museo Archeologico “Villa Abbas” in Sardara and in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari.
