About the museum
The Cuccurada complex stands on the southern tip of the basalt plateau of Sa Struvina, at Mogoro, in a commanding position over the Campidano plain and the valley of the Rio Mogoro. The site was first investigated in the mid-twentieth century by Giovanni Lilliu; since 1994 numerous excavation campaigns, still ongoing, have uncovered monumental structures from different periods.
The oldest belong to the Eneolithic: a megalithic wall nearly three metres high and a cyclopean structure with an elliptical plan (Cuccurada A), attributable to the Monte Claro culture. Above a settlement rises the complex nuraghe (Cuccurada B), which grew out of a corridor building of the Bronze Age and was later enclosed in a bastion with four towers. In the central courtyard, huts built inside the walls were found.
After partial destruction the site was reused in historical times, probably for pagan, Christian and Jewish rites. The park is visited with guides, whose office houses an information point and a teaching and exhibition room; some of the excavation finds are displayed in the Museo Archeologico set up in the Convento del Carmine in Mogoro.
