About the museum
The Real Sito di Carditello, also known as the Reggia di Carditello (royal palace), was commissioned by Charles of Bourbon as a place for hunting and horse breeding. His son Ferdinand IV transformed it into a model estate for growing cereals and breeding fine horses and cattle. The neoclassical residence was designed by Francesco Collecini, a pupil and collaborator of Luigi Vanvitelli: the central building has a royal chapel, eight towers and twelve sheds.
The estate originally covered about 2,100 hectares. In 1920 the buildings passed to the Opera Nazionale Combattenti (National Veterans’ Agency) and much of the land was sold; during the war the site was occupied by German and then Allied troops. After years of neglect and unsuccessful auctions, the complex was acquired by the State in 2014.
The site was reopened to the public on 8 January 2017 and is now run by the Fondazione Real Sito di Carditello. The visit includes the central building, the Bourbon stables and the historic park, which is associated with the tradition of the Persano horse.
