About the museum
The Rocca Maggiore dominates Assisi from the highest point of the town and offers a view of the historic centre and much of the Umbrian valley. It was rebuilt in 1362 by Cardinal Egidio Albornoz on an earlier German fortification, and was later altered by various lords and popes.
In recent years it has undergone restoration works lasting about two years; when it reopened in 2023, spaces that had previously been inaccessible were made visitable, including the walkway that runs along three sides of the monument. The civic museums of Assisi, including the Rocca, have been entrusted under concession to the company Opera Laboratori. Visitors can see the courtyard, the square keep with its spiral staircase and the exhibition spaces.
