About the museum

The museum was founded in 1989 by Davide Costantini, who conceived and curates it, and is dedicated to the traditional arts and crafts of Umbria. It has changed location several times: at first it was in Via San Francesco; in 2012 it moved next to the oratory of San Francesco Piccolino, and since 2018 it has occupied the Santa Chiarella monumental complex, opposite Porta Nuova, in the historic centre of Assisi.

The collection brings together more than two thousand tools and objects from craft workshops and farmhouses, relating to trades such as barber, bricklayer, tinsmith, blacksmith, cooper and shoemaker, as well as farm implements and tools for weaving and spinning. About a thousand further pieces were being prepared for display.

The museum reopened on 11 June 2021 after the closure linked to the pandemic, and admission is free.
