About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the rescue of around three hundred Jews who were given refuge in Assisi between 1943 and 1944, thanks to a clandestine network led by Bishop Giuseppe Placido Nicolini, with Father Rufino Niccacci, the podestà (mayor) Arnaldo Fortini, Don Aldo Brunacci, female religious orders and other citizens. The secret centre for routing the refugees was located in the Vescovado itself.
It was inaugurated on 24 March 2011 by the Opera Casa Papa Giovanni, wanted by Don Brunacci, on the initiative of the emeritus bishop Sergio Goretti. After the opening of the Santuario della Spogliazione, Bishop Domenico Sorrentino moved the museum to the Vescovado, including the basements where Nicolini operated. The new opening on 16 May 2018 added a section on Gino Bartali, who carried forged documents between Assisi and Florence, with a reconstruction of the small chapel where he prayed.
The display, bilingual in Italian and English, includes unpublished documents, photographs, objects and testimonies, a documentary with interviews of the protagonists, and the original printing press of the printers Luigi and Trento Brizi, who printed the forged documents for the persecuted.
