About the museum

The Sacrario militare dei Caduti d'Oltremare was built by the Ministry of Defence and inaugurated on 10 December 1967 on the outskirts of Bari, in the Japigia district. The design is by Paolo Caccia Dominioni, partly inspired by the shrine at Tripoli. The complex, built of Trani stone and set in a wide park, holds the remains of about 75,000 Italian servicemen who fell abroad in the Second World War, transferred here after the closure of war cemeteries in the Balkans, North and East Africa and the Mediterranean; for a substantial part of them, identity could not be established.

In the park vehicles, artillery and monuments are displayed. Two structures come from the old shrine at Tripoli: a stretch of Roman aqueduct and the “archi delle battaglie” (arches of the battles), with plaques commemorating clashes from 1911 to 1943. Every evening at sunset a bell, inscribed “Victi vivimus”, tolls nine times. A plaque commemorates 140 Eritrean and Libyan ascari (colonial soldiers) whose remains were brought to Bari in 1972.

Under the portico and the access staircase is the history museum, with documents, photographs, uniforms, weapons and relics from the colonial campaigns to the Resistance and the Second World War; there is also a screening room. On the upper floor the central cloister holds the remains of the fallen. The shrine hosts commemorative ceremonies on 25 April and 4 November.
