About the museum
The Sanctuary of Hercules Victor stands in Tivoli, along a stretch of the ancient Via Tiburtina outside the city walls. It was built in the 2nd century BC and is one of the largest sacred complexes of Roman republican architecture. Suetonius records that Augustus administered justice under its porticoes.
The complex has a rectangular plan of about 188 by 140 metres and is divided into three parts: a theatre set into the natural slope, a large colonnaded square and the temple. For centuries it fell into decay; restoration was completed in June 2011. Part of the structure was incorporated into the former paper mill of Tivoli, at the foot of the medieval quarter.
The site is managed by the Istituto autonomo Villae of the Ministry of Culture, together with Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este, and tickets are bought through Coopculture.
