About the museum
Gabii was a city of Latium vetus, located at the twelfth milestone of the Via Prenestina, and an important political and cultural centre before the rise of Rome. Traces of settlement go back to the late 8th or early 7th century BC; its quarries supplied Rome with the lapis gabinus, an excellent building stone.
After its abandonment, around the 11th century, the agricultural use of the land preserved the ancient structures, which lie only a few tens of centimetres below the surface of the fields. In 1987 the State acquired about 70 hectares of the ancient city and entrusted them to the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) of Rome, to create a suburban archaeological park.
The park includes the city walls, the forum, the temple of Juno Gabina, a dwelling of the 6th century BC, an extra-urban sanctuary and older remains such as Bronze Age huts. Since 2009 the Gabii Project of the University of Michigan has carried out large-scale excavations; other sectors are studied by the University of Rome Tor Vergata and, for the sanctuary of Juno Gabina, by the Musée du Louvre.
