About the museum
The museum occupies the Scola Grande synagogue, built between 1246 and 1247 at the height of the prosperity of Trani's Jewish community, along the main street of the Jewish quarter. The building was later converted into the church of Sant'Anna. Together with the Scolanova synagogue, it is one of the two surviving buildings of the former quarter.
The restoration project dates to 1992 and was completed in December 2009 with the opening of the museum. The works brought to light the original floor level, some cisterns and a stone base, while retaining the elements added in later centuries: the perimeter walls remain, along with an inscription dating the foundation to the year 5007 since the creation of the world, the dome on an octagonal drum, an 18th-century wooden altar, the medieval apse, 17th-century decorations and the bell tower.
The museum is the Jewish section of the Museo diocesano of the Archdiocese of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie. In the crypt are kept funerary cippi from the cemeteries of the Jewish community; on the upper floor educational panels describe the Jewish presence in Trani and in southern Italy (Mezzogiorno) up to the 13th–15th centuries, and copies of documents, a mezuzah of the 12th–13th centuries and parchment fragments of a 14th-century Hebrew Bible are displayed.
